When selecting a defensive tool, a flashlight is no different than any other piece of kit. It needs to be reliable, durable, and capable of properly filling its role.
Information Gathering — Positive identification of a target and confirmation of ability, opportunity, perceived intent, immediate jeopardy, and preclusion — all in low-light conditions.
Visual Disruption — Creating an intense photonic barrier that visually overwhelms an adversary. This buys time to move, time to decide, and time to gain advantage.
If you're going to carry it, you should understand it.
| Metric | What It Measures |
|---|---|
| Lumens | Total light output. Think of lumens like the total gallons of water coming out of a hose. |
| Candela | How concentrated the light is. This is how tight the nozzle is. More candela means more throw. |
| Lux | How much light actually reaches the target at distance. Lumens tell you how much light exists. Candela tells you how concentrated it is. Lux tells you what actually matters at distance. |
Positive Identification (PID) — Your light must deliver 10 to 30 lux at your maximum defensive range to reliably identify a target.
Visual Impairment — 500 lux on target is the threshold for reliable aversion and visual disruption.
Light intensity does not drop linearly with distance. This is the inverse square law — when you double the distance, you get one quarter the lux. Candela is what determines how far your light can reach those thresholds.
Two lights from the same manufacturer illustrate the gap candela makes:
| SureFire Tactician | SureFire Dual Fuel Turbo | |
|---|---|---|
| Lumens | 800 | 700 |
| Candela | 3,200 | 100,000+ |
| Max PID | 18 yds | 88.75 yds |
| Visual Impairment | 3.6 yds | 17.75 yds |
Despite having fewer lumens, the Turbo outperforms the Tactician at distance by nearly 5x for PID and nearly 5x for visual impairment.
If your light cannot hit the required lux threshold at your intended distance, it is not filling its defensive role.
Select your equipment with intention. Test it. Understand it. Train with it.
